May 31, 2012

Tried to sit down, watch 'The Final Countdown', hand knit a sweater, & relax ... but ended up going on a med call instead. I did manage to watch a very interrupted movie & after that figured I'd see what that show '24' is all about. I watched most of the 1st episode & then Pete came home. Mitt Romney will be in Dallas on Tuesday.

Are busy schedules causing you to turn to takeout? Fire up the slow cooker instead. Start a roast on low in the morning, & be rewarded when you get home. Slice the roast for sandwiches on hearty wholegrain buns & toss a green salad for a quick, nutritious meal.

As the summer weather heats up your house, make sure your ceiling fans are spinning in the counter-clockwise direction to push the cool air down.

Deep Throat is revealed (2005):
W. Mark Felt’s family ends 30 years of speculation, identifying Felt, the former FBI assistant director, as “Deep Throat,” the secret source who helped unravel the Watergate scandal. The Felt family’s admission, made in an article in Vanity Fair magazine, took legendary reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who had promised to keep their source’s identity a secret until his death, by surprise. Tapes show that Nixon himself had speculated that Felt was the secret informant as early as 1973.
The question “Who was Deep Throat?” had been investigated relentlessly in the ensuing years since Watergate in movies, books, televisions shows, and on the Internet. America was obsessed with the shadowy figure who went to great lengths to conceal his involvement with the Washington Post reporters. Although his name was often mentioned as a possibility, Felt consistently denied being Deep Throat, even writing in his 1979 memoir, “I never leaked information to Woodward and Bernstein or to anyone else!” Even as recently as six years before the admission, he was quoted as saying, “It would be contrary to my responsibility as a loyal employee of the FBI to leak information.”
After the death of J. Edgar Hoover, then director of the FBI, Felt, who was serving as the bureau’s assistant director, wanted the job and was angry over Nixon’s failure to appoint him. He was also upset over Nixon’s attempts to stall the bureau’s investigation into the Watergate break-ins. So, when Bob Woodward called the veteran FBI employee to request information about the bureau’s Watergate investigation, Felt agreed to talk. But his cooperation came with strict restrictions. Felt refused to be quoted, even anonymously, and agreed only to confirm information already obtained, refusing to provide new information. And, of course, the reporters had to promise to keep his identity a secret. Felt was only contacted on matters of great importance.
Although the two initially talked by phone, Felt soon began to worry that his phones could be tapped. So, he and Woodward devised a set of signals and began to meet in the middle of the night in a parking garage. Over the ensuing months, Felt corroborated stories linking Nixon’s reelection committee to the Watergate break-ins and illegal investigations of the Democratic Party. He also alerted Woodward to the far-reaching nature of the scandal, indicating that it could be traced back to government higher-ups, including President Nixon himself.
In the aftermath of Felt’s admission, both Woodward and Bernstein expressed worries that, due to the intense interest in the Deep Throat mystery over the years, Felt’s role in unraveling the complicated web of lies and deceit that was Watergate may be overstated. They reminded Americans that other sources, Nixon’s secret White House tape recordings, the Senate’s Watergate hearings, and the historic action of the U.S. Supreme Court all played an important role in bringing the truth to light.
In 1973, the Washington Post won a Pulitzer Prize in public service for its coverage of the Watergate scandal.
W. Mark Felt died on December 18, 2008, at the age of 95.

Lilies of the valley in your outside garden would look just lovely indoors. Can you dig them up & bring them inside, to bloom indoors in the winter?
Yes, indeed. Dig & lift the lily of the valley rhizome & cut pieces about as large as a thick finger, making sure that each piece contains a distinct bud, or eye. Those pieces are called pips. To grow & bloom, pips need to go through a cooling period of 8 weeks at soil temperatures no warmer than 45°. The pops should be wrapped in barely moist peat moss, put in a plastic bag, & placed in the coldest part of your refrigerator - low & in the back. Some bulbs & rhizomes can have their flowering inhibited by ethylene gas, so you may want to 1st eat all your apples, pears, & cantaloupes, which produce ethylene.
Once they've been through the cooling period, the pips can be potted up just below the surface in a rich, well-drained medium. They'll do well in the low light of an east or west window & should bloom in about 3 weeks.

My Girlfriend's Boyfriend:
Jesse Young (Alyssa Milano) is a girl who has everything and maybe too much of it when she finds herself falling for two seemingly perfect guys: sexy but struggling writer Ethan (Christopher Gorham) and button-down advertising exec Troy (Michael Landes). Can she find true love with two men at the same time, or is somebody going to get a broken heart? Director Daryn Tufts's romantic comedy is a sweet-natured examination of modern sexual mores.

Here's a quiz for all you etymology buffs. Which of the following words come from the same Latin root? a. redaction b. prodigal c. agent d. essay e. navigate f. ambiguous
If you guessed all of them, you're right. Now, for bonus points, name the Latin root they all have in common. If you said the verb agere, meaning to "to drive, lead, act, or do," you get an A+. "Redaction" is from the Latin verb redigere ("to bring back" or "to reduce"), which was formed by adding the prefix red- ("back") to agere. Some other agere offspring include "act," "agenda." "cogent," "litigate," & "transact."

I finally caught up with my mail yesterday. The storms have woken me up several times during the night & at one point I swore we were going to get toned out because it sounded like lightning hit ground CLOSE. We sure need the rain though & I'm loving it for the plants. Happy plants, happy grass, happy trees ... happy firefighters (less grass fires). Got some bad news this morning, Fire-Rescue Camp has been canceled due to not enough students to start a class. They needed 15 & only got 5. Kyle was really looking forward to it too. :( I just installed Office 2010 (I've waited SO long for this!) & although I've only seen Outlook so far, I love it! Mitt Romney will be in Dallas Tuesday!

An addiction to gardening isn't all bad when you consider all the other choices in life.

Even if the host has tipped the coat-check person because he collected all the tickets on arrival, it's a nice gesture to try to reimburse him: "Jack, won't you please let me take care of this?" But also know when to take no for an answer.

If something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true. The envelope-stuffing business is a scam, so please don't send 1 of those companies $50 to learn more about that "wonderful career."

Weeping blue Atlas cedar
Weeping Nootka false cypress
Weeping willowleaf pear

Any weeping flowering crab apples or cherries
There is no more striking plant sculpture than a weeping tree. These handsome weepers may be controlled with pruning & will grow in a terrace tub, which should be at least 18" in each dimension.

Sex and the City movie released (2008):
On this day in 2008, the film version of HBO’s iconic comedy series Sex and the City, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, premieres in more than 3,200 theaters around the country and goes on to become a big box-office success.
The Sex and the City TV series, which debuted some 10 years before, was based on the book by the same name by the New York City socialite and writer Candace Bushnell. As conceived by Darren Star (famous for the long-running Fox series Beverly Hills, 90210, about rich and privileged teens growing up in that Los Angeles-area Zip code), the show followed the 30-something sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw (played by Parker, an executive producer of both the series and the movie) and her three very different girlfriends--libidinous Samantha (Kim Cattrall), prim Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and cynical Miranda (Cynthia Nixon)--on their adventures in New York City.
Arguably the main drama of the series revolved around Carrie’s on-and-off relationship with the emotionally evasive businessman she dubbed Mr. Big (Chris Noth). In the series finale, which aired in February 2004, Big follows Carrie to Paris, where she has moved with her latest beau, to proclaim his love for her. As Sex and the City: The Movie opened, the couple is planning to move together into a sumptuous Manhattan apartment. A wedding is planned, and Carrie’s three friends--now all involved in committed relationships themselves, with varying degrees of success--gather to watch the fireworks that ensue. The high-fashion element of the trendsetting TV show--especially Carrie’s  outrageous ensembles, dreamt up by the series’ costume designer, Patricia Field--was played up even more in the movie, including couture brands such as Louis Vuitton and designers such as Vivienne Westwood.
Though a movie version of Sex and the City was buzzed about shortly after the series wrapped up in 2004, the project stalled due to questions over money and co-star Cattrall’s reported reluctance to sign on to the project. The popularity of the show was fueled after its finale by rerun episodes appearing in syndication as well as strong DVD sales, and the movie, written and directed by Michael Patrick King, was eventually made on a budget of some $65 million.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film’s box-office success would immediately spark talk of a sequel. After opening in midnight showings, Sex and the City: The Movie raked in some $55.7 million in its opening weekend, beating out the latest installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, according to a report in the New York Times. As the Times pointed out, this fell short of the mark that some predicted after sold-out early shows led to a $26 million haul on opening day, but it far exceeded previous opening weekends by similarly female-driven features (so-called “chick flicks”) such as The Devil Wears Prada ($27.5 million). It was also the strongest opening for a movie with a female lead character (without adjusting for inflation), beating out the previous mark of $47.7 million set by Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), starring Angelina Jolie.

Sward:
1: A portion of ground covered with grass. 2: The grassy surface of land.
Students in flip-flops slap lazily across the green swards of campuses as bell music peals from the campaniles.
"Sward," which sprouted up i the English language more than 500 years ago, is currently used more frequently as a surname than as a noun having to do with lawns & the like. Still, you'll find the occasional reference to a "green sward" or "grassy sward" in newspapers. And the term pops up in a number of old novels, such as in this quote from Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles: "The sun was so near the ground, & the sward so flat, that the shadows of Clare & Tess would stretch a quarter of a mile ahead of them ..." "Sward" at one time referred to skin or rind, & especially to the rind of pork or bacon, although this meaning is now archaic. The word comes from the Old English sweard or swearth, meaning "skin" or "rind."

- May 29, 2012 -

Yeah, it's gross ... but if I ever got a tattoo it'd probably be something like this. LOL! SO ... the holiday weekend was busy as heck. I didn't get too much of my normal stuff done, but the yard looks fabulous (compared to what it was) & I hope to improve on it now that's it's looking so much better. The gardening from seed thing didn't work for me at all. It's just not my forte, so next month I'm going to try buying potted plants & planting those. Wish me luck! RIP to all the poor little seeds I planted that sprouted (almost 100%) & then quickly died. I have one question ... how does the planet survive without people? I mean it does just fine ... it doesn't need us. Seeds fall, sprout, & grow to full-sized plants all the time. So why is it that 100% of the seeds I planted sprouted & then died? You'd think at least ONE of them would have ACCIDENTALLY survived like they do in the wild every day. Anyway, woke up to a med call this morning, came back, went back to bed, woke up & here I am! :-) This month's 5th Tuesday at LCFD has been cancelled so we can all recuperate from the long weekend. City Council Meeting next Tuesday.

Anytime you give someone money, you want to make sure it's causing them to move in a direction that helps them. If you give them money & they don't work & they stay disorganized & keep overspending, then you're giving a drunk a drink. But if you're giving someone money who's trying & struggling & heading toward the right thing, what you're doing is giving them a leg up.

Danica Patrick becomes first woman to lead Indy 500 (2005):
On this day in 2005, 23-year-old Danica Patrick becomes the first female driver to take the lead in the storied Indianapolis 500.
Having previously distinguished herself in the Toyota Atlantic series, Patrick had qualified fourth--another best for a woman--for the 89th Indianapolis 500, only her fifth Indy Racing League event. (Toyota Atlantic served as a feeder system for the Champ Car Series, Indy's rival open-wheel racing circuit. Open-wheel cars are sophisticated vehicles built specifically for racing, with small, open cockpits and wheels located outside the car's main body.) Patrick entered the Indy 500 in a car co-owned by Bobby Rahal, winner of the Indy 500 in 1986, and David Letterman, the late-night talk show host. After a pit stop on the 79th lap of the 200-lap, 500-mile race, Patrick stalled her engine, falling from 4th to 16th place. She spent the next 70 laps climbing back into the top 10, then took the lead with 10 laps left in front of 300,000 screaming fans at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
When her team took a gamble that she could make it to the end without an additional pit stop, Patrick was forced to conserve fuel. With six laps left, British driver Dan Wheldon passed her. With his first Indy 500 win, Wheldon became the first Briton to claim victory at the event since Graham Hill in 1966. Patrick, meanwhile, finished in fourth place, behind Vitor Meira and Bryan Herta. Her stellar performance earned her Rookie of the Year honors and a place in the history books alongside Janet Guthrie, who exactly 28 years before--on May 29, 1977--had become the first woman to drive in the Indy 500. Three women before Patrick had driven in a combined 15 Indy 500 events; Guthrie was the previous top finisher, coming in ninth place in 1978.
Three years after Patrick's star-making turn at the Indy 500, she became the first woman to win an Indy Racing League event, defeating the two-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves by nearly six seconds in the Indy Japan 300. Having left her previous team a year earlier, Patrick had joined the team owned by Michael Andretti, son of the legendary driver Mario Andretti and a former racer himself. In a statement honoring Patrick's victory, fellow Indy driver Sarah Fisher linked the accomplishment with that of Guthrie and other trailblazing women: "Today marks the celebration for all of us who have chipped away at the barriers that many women have faced in fields that are dominated by men. To finally have a female win an open-wheel race is simply a progression of what Janet Guthrie started."

Leaves off this curious plant from Brazil fall into 3 categories: those with brown blotches called rabbit tracks, which turn dark green with age; those with a herringbone pattern of prominent red veins; & those with black-green leaves & silvery veins. What is it?
Prayer plant. It got its name because each night, its broad, strikingly colored goliage golds upward in a prayerlike position, & there it stays until daybreak.
Although easily grown, the prayer plant has rather specific needs. Among these are protection from direct sunlight & cold winter drafts, soil that's evenly moist not sodden, & constant humidity. If you don't want it in your bathroom, keep it on top of pebbles in a shallow, water-filled tray.

Mordant:
1: Biting & caustic in thought, manner, or style : incisive. 2: Burning, pungent.
The newspaper columnist skewered the absurdities of the political scene with her acute insights & mordant wit.
The etymology of "mordant" certainly has some bite to it. That word came to modern English through Middle French & ultimately derives from the Latin verb mordere, which means "to bite." In modern parlance, "mordant" usually suggests a wit used with deadly effectiveness. Mordere adds bite to other English terms, too, such as the tasty "morsel" ("a tiny bite"). But nibble too many of those & you'll likely be hit by another mordere derivative: "remorse" ("guilt for past wrongs"), which comes from Latin remordere, meaning "to bite again."

May 28, 2012

The "Memorial" in Memorial Day has been ignored by too many of us who are beneficiaries of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Often we do not observe the day as it should be, a day where we actively remember our ancestors, our family members, our loved ones, our neighbors, and our friends who have given the ultimate sacrifice:
  • by visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.
  • by visiting memorials.
  • by flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon.
  • by flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).
  • by participating in a "National Moment of Remembrance": at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day, and for Taps to be played.
  • by renewing a pledge to aid the widows, widowers, and orphans of our fallen dead, and to aid the disabled veterans.
Also, please consider adding your voice in support of the efforts to restore the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th (instead of "the last Monday in May"). This would help greatly to return the solemn meaning back to the day, and to help return minds and hearts to think upon the ultimate sacrifices made by those in service to our country. Just one day out of the year to honor our loved ones, our ancestors, our friends who died in conflicts and wars -- not to honor war, but those that died in those conflicts and wars.

2 popular varieties of this plant are 'Maid of Orleans' or 'Grand Duke of Tuscany.' What's the plant (common & scientific names, please)?
Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac). It has graceful, cascading stems & is treasured for its fragrant blooms. The Chinese use unopened flower buds to perfume tea, & the dainty white flowers are used for leis in Hawaii.
Keep these jasmines warm & give them at least 4 hours of bright sun daily. An east or west window is better than a south-facing one. Keep the soil most but not wet. To encourage blooms & good growth throughout the major flowering season (spring to late fall), feed the plants ever 2 weeks, alternating a high-nitrogen organic fertilizer such as fish emulsion with any all-purpose water-soluble blend that is recommended for flowering plants. In late fall, cut back on the feeding schedule. While the plant is having its winter rest, a half-strength dose of all-purpose plant food every 6 weeks is all it needs. To keep the plant shapely & free-flowering, prune back by about 1/3 in the early spring, before the start of the new trowing season.

Avoid multi-tasking if the task requires a high level of concentration, it's best to stay focused on that 1 task to ensure it's done right & on time.

In this Oscar-winning classic, American expat Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) plays host to gamblers, thieves and refugees at his Moroccan nightclub during World War II ... but he never expected Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) - the woman who broke his heart -- to walk through that door. Ilsa hopes that with Rick's help, she and her fugitive husband (Paul Henreid) can escape to America. But the spark that brought the lovers together still burns brightly.

Comic Phil Hartman killed by wife (1998):
On this day in 1998, the comedian and actor Phil Hartman, famous for his work on Saturday Night Live and NewsRadio, is shot to death by his troubled wife, Brynn, in a murder-suicide. He was 49.
Born on September 24, 1948, in Ontario, Canada, Hartman was raised in Connecticut and Southern California, and later became an American citizen. Early on, he found work designing record album covers (he created the official logo for the rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) but made the leap to acting in 1975 when he joined the L.A. improvisational acting group, the Groundlings. With his fellow Groundlings alum, Paul Reubens, Hartman wrote the screenplay for the successful comedy Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (1985). Along with Reubens, Hartman had helped create the zany man-child character of Pee Wee Herman, though Reubens received most of the credit. From 1986 to 1990, Hartman portrayed Kap’n Karl on the Saturday morning children’s TV series Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.
Also in 1986, Hartman earned a spot on the long-running NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. In his eight years on the show, Hartman became known for his spot-on impersonations of a variety of celebrities, notably President Bill Clinton. He also made frequent guest appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 1989, Hartman shared an Emmy Award for his writing contributions to Saturday Night Live. He went on to set a record for the most appearances (153) as one of the show’s regulars.
Hartman joined the cast of the TV sitcom NewsRadio in 1995. He played the egotistical anchorman of an AM radio news station in New York City through four seasons of the show’s five-year run. The ensemble cast also included Dave Foley, Maura Tierney and Andy Dick. Hartman also notably provided the voices for a number of characters, including the has-been actor Troy McClure and the incompetent lawyer Lionel Hurtz, on the acclaimed animated series The Simpsons. In addition to his TV work as an actor and pitchman (for MCI, McDonald’s and Cheetos, among others), Hartman appeared on the big screen in Blind Date (1987), Jingle All the Way (1996) and Small Soldiers, released after his death.
Off-screen, Hartman was popular among his Hollywood colleagues and known for being completely different from some of the more unlikable characters he had portrayed. The murder-suicide, which shocked fans and friends alike, occurred early on the morning of May 28, 1998, at the couple’s home in the Los Angeles suburb of Encino. Hollywood power couple welcomes child (2006):
On this day in 2006, in Swakopmund, Namibia, the actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt welcome the arrival of their first biological child, a daughter named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt.
Talented and famous, Jolie and Pitt were both fixtures on Hollywood’s A-list by the time they starred together as married assassins in the action film Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005). Rumors soon began flying that the two had begun an off-screen affair, and intensified after Pitt and his wife, Jennifer Aniston (most famous for her role on the long-running TV sitcom Friends), announced their separation in early 2005. That spring, Pitt and Jolie (who had previously been married to the actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton) were photographed on a beach in Africa, where Jolie was working as a representative for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Though Pitt and Jolie refused to publicly acknowledge their relationship, they fueled speculation throughout 2005, notably by posing in a photo spread for W magazine. The press dubbed the couple “Brangelina” and obsessively chronicled their every move, noting Pitt’s growing comfort with Jolie’s two adopted children, Maddox (from Cambodia) and Zahara (from Ethiopia). On January 11, 2006, Jolie announced she was pregnant with Pitt’s child; barely a week later, the news broke that Pitt had successfully adopted Maddox and Zahara, whose surnames were legally changed to Jolie-Pitt.
Jolie gave birth to little Shiloh by a scheduled caesarean section that May in Namibia, an African country that had come under intense media scrutiny since the celebrity power couple decided it would be the birthplace of their first biological child. Pitt and Jolie held a press conference days after the birth, stating that Shiloh would have a Namibian passport; they had earlier announced a donation of $300,000 to refurbish hospitals there. Jolie had reportedly been attracted to Namibia after filming the movie Beyond Borders (2003) and meeting with aid workers there.
Shiloh’s first baby pictures went for a then-record sum of more than $4.1 million for the U.S. rights (paid by People magazine, which ran the photos in their June 19, 2006, issue) and $3.5 million for the international rights (picked up by Hello!). Pitt and Jolie donated those profits to charity. In February 2007, Jolie generated controversy for telling British ELLE that little blonde Shiloh was, as a newborn, like “a blob” and saying that she feels “so much more for [Maddox and Zahara] because they’re survivors, they came through so much.” That March, Jolie and Pitt adopted another son, Pax Thien, from Vietnam. When Jolie and Pitt’s biological twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, arrived in July 2008, People paid $14 million--another record-breaking sum--for images that adorned its cover and a 19-page photo spread inside the magazine. As before, the money went to charity.

Audie Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1945 for valorous & heroic acts that saved his company in the face of a fierce German assault.
If you're boldly seeking synonyms for "valorous," consider "courageous," "intrepid," "dauntless," "doughty," "bold," or just plain "brave" - all of which mean "having or showing no fear when faced with danger or difficulty." "Brave" is the most straightforward of these, implying a lack of fear in alarming or difficult circumstances. "Courageous" carries a sense of stout-hearted resolution in the face of danger, & "intrepid" suggests downright daring in confronting peril. "Dauntless" suggests determination & resolution despite danger, & "doughty" means both "fearless" & "resolute," but with a touch of humor. "Bold" may also indicate a forward or defiant tendency to thrust oneself into dangerous situations. "Valorous" has the distinction of suggesting illustrious bravery & has an archaic or romantic ring.

Ø May 26, 2012 Ø

I did it, I finally had a day where I got it all done & even had time to breathe while doing it. I even relaxed a little at the end of it all. I don't know whether I'm happy about it or not though. I mean, I really needed it ... but technically it wasn't supposed to happen. Had I made that structure fire in New Hope the night before, I would have come back home, gone back to bed, slept much later than I did, & I wouldn't have come close to finishing (again). So, I finished ... I had a great day ... but at the cost of sleeping though a structure fire out of sheer exhaustion from the entire week leading up to it. "Perfect" would have been either NO structure fire call, or making the structure fire call AND finishing everything. I cheated the system, that's like having a perfect day because you cut class. I pulled a Ferris Bueller (though not intentionally). To Scott, Paul, & Keith ... thank you for going. Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Clean out the garage. Empty it out completely. Sweep the floor. Get rid of the cobwebs in the corners. Donate or throw away any unused or broken toys, lawn equipment, tools, etc. If you've not used it in the past year ... it's time to let it go! Put everything back in the garage. Make this a family event.

Deterge:
To wash off : to cleansw
In order to prevent infection, it's necessary to properly deterge & disinfect the wound.
Although not particularly common in the English language, "deterge" is related to a word that most of us are familiar with: "detergent." Like "detergent," "deterge" comes (possibly by way of French deterger) from the Latin verb detergere, itself from de- & tergere (to wipe"). "Deterge" entered the English language in the early 1600s & has primarily been used in medical contexts.

Sidney Pollack dies (2008):
On this day in 2008, the film director, producer and actor Sidney Pollack, whose string of hits included Tootsie, Out of Africa and The Firm, dies of cancer at his home in Los Angeles, at the age of 73.
After high school, Pollack left his hometown of South Bend, Indiana, to study at New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater. He acted in a Playhouse telecast of For Whom the Bell Tolls, directed by John Frankenheimer, and appeared on Broadway in several productions. According to Pollack’s obituary in the New York Times, it was Burt Lancaster who pointed the young actor toward directing, introducing him to the Hollywood mogul Lew Wasserman, who got Pollack a gig on the television series Shotgun Slade. Pollack later directed episodes of Ben Casey and The Fugitive for TV and won an Emmy Award for helming a Bob Hope-hosted show in 1966.
Pollack’s first feature film, The Slender Thread, starred Sidney Poitier and Anne Bancroft and was released in 1965. Critical reception was cool, and only rose to lukewarm for his next several efforts. He broke through in 1969 with They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, starring Jane Fonda. The bleak Great Depression-era film received nine Oscar nominations, including one for Pollack as Best Director.  Four years later, he scored a commercial hit with The Way We Were, a weepy romance starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford that was largely panned by critics. One of Pollack’s most frequent collaborators, Redford also starred (opposite Faye Dunaway) in Pollack’s hit 1975 thriller Three Days of the Condor and (opposite Fonda) his screwball 1979 comedy The Electric Horseman.
After a foray into serious drama with Absence of Malice (1981), Pollack returned with a comedic bang in the following year’s acclaimed hit Tootsie, for which he earned a second Oscar nomination for Best Director. The film was the second-highest grossing film of 1982, behind only E.T., directed by Steven Spielberg. Pollack finally took home the Best Director trophy for the romantic drama Out of Africa (1985), starring Meryl Streep and Redford. The film also won the Oscar for Best Picture. The Redford vehicle Havana (1990) flopped, but Pollack soon bounced back with the hugely successful legal thriller The Firm (1993), based on the best-selling John Grisham novel.
After two disappointments--Sabrina (1995) and Random Hearts (1999), both starring Harrison Ford--Pollack took a five-year hiatus from directing, returning with the drama The Interpreter (2005), starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. During the latter part of his career, Pollack amassed an impressive roster of independent films as a producer. In 2000, he partnered with the director Anthony Minghella (who also died in 2008) to form Mirage Enterprises. The company released Minghella’s acclaimed Cold Mountain (2005) and Pollack’s last film as a director, the documentary Sketches of Frank Gehry, in 2006.
Throughout his career, Pollack maintained a reputation for working particularly well with big-name actors, including Redford, Fonda, Streisand, Streep, Ford, Sally Field, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. He racked up a number of notable performances himself, including a starring turn in Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives (1992). Pollack appeared in his own movies numerous times, playing Hoffman’s agent in Tootsie and Penn’s boss in The Interpreter, among other roles. On the small screen, he had a recurring role on the sitcom Will & Grace and appeared on Just Shoot Me, Mad About You, The Sopranos and Entourage. Most recently, he was featured in 2007’s Michael Clayton (which he also produced) as a jaded corporate lawyer, and in the 2008 comedy Made of Honor.

You bought a new plant. It looked great. But now you have tiny flying bugs all over your apartment. How can you make sure you don't purchase infected plants again?
Check the prospective adoptee for general health as well as for insects. Ate there signs that a lot  were removed? That may be because they were damaged by bugs. Are the leaves that are there unusually curly? Curled leaves can signal that there were aphids or red spider mites around while the seedlings were growing. Though the grower may have gotten rid of adult insects by spraying the plants with a pesticide or a blast of water, just one escaped aphid is enough to start a whole new infestation.
The next step is quarantine. Before letting a new plant join your old friends, keep it by itself for 11 days so you can monitor developments. Your apartment's best growing locations probably already have plants in them, but the newcomer will be all right cooling its heels in a less-favored place as long as its sojourn there is comparatively short.

- May 25, 2012 -

Another busy day in Lowry Crossing yesterday. 4 calls, everything from a down power line which turned out to be several live lines on the ground & a snapped pole with a transformer attached, to snapped tree branches blocking the roadway (unless you're in a Miata), & a couple med calls. Then mutual aid to a structure fire at 3:a this morning. Thursday, lucky for me, is the day I take for myself. Forget everything that needs to be done ... Thursday is my relaxing day come hell or high water. Well, it took me NINE HOURS to GET to it, but I finally sat down & relaxed BEFORE I did any of the things I was supposed to do around the house. It also took me THREE hours to sit down & relax for ONE hour. Yep, it's that ridiculous around here on a regular basis ... 9 hours to get to something, then 3 hours to complete that 1 hour item. Anyway, I had to pause it multiple times, but I did manage to watch a little over half of the end of a movie. I turned the TV on & saw Michael Keaton. I thought; cool, I could use some comedy about now ... Gung Ho, Mr. Mom ... something like that. Well Michael Keaton also made at least one horror movie & I just happened to stumble onto it yesterday. It wasn't exactly what I was in the mood for, but it was good; it was called White Noise: Architect John Rivers (Michael Keaton) is shattered by the death of his beloved wife, Anna (Chandra West). When a man (Ian McNeice) contacts him with claims of receiving messages from Anna through Electronic Voice Phenomena, John ultimately is convinced of the communication's validity. Soon John becomes fixated on trying to contact his wife himself -- but his investigation into EVP inadvertently unlocks a door to another world. Since we're on the subject, I went ahead & found an app for that. No, not for communicating with a lost loved one, but an app for white noise. Find it below. Happy Memorial Day Weekend! School has given everyone a 4 day weekend & Pete has a 3 day weekend.

Apotheosis:
1: Elevation to divine status : deification. 2: The perfect example : quintessence.
The L.S. Philharmonic performance Tuesday was a marvelous apotheosis of rhythm.
Among the ancient Greeks, it was sometimes thought fitting - or simply handy, say, if you wanted a god somewhere in your bloodline - to grant someone god status. So they created the word apotheosis, meaning "making into a god." (The prefix apo- can mean simply "quite" or completely," & theos is the Greek word for "god.") There's not a lot of Greek-style apotheosizing in the 21st century, but there is hero-worship. Our extended use of "apotheosis" as "elevation to divine status" os tje eqiovalent of "placement on a very high pedestal." Even more common these days is to use "apotheosis" in reference to a perfect example or ultimate form. For instance, one might describe a movie such as Star Wars as "the apotheosis of the sci-fi movie genre."

From 1975 to 1995, there were only 4 U.S. states that didn't record an earthquake. Can you guess which 4?

Houseplants can often be moved outside this time of year. This will free up space inside your home during the summer months. Avoid direct sunlight & don't forget to water.

If you keep a lot of pets, then you should budget for pet care. There's going to come a point where 1 of your pets is sick all the time. So if you've got animals coming out your ears, you need to budget for more than annual checkups, vaccinations & so on.

Pennsylvania man buried with his beloved Corvette (1994):
On this day in 1994, the ashes of 71-year-old George Swanson are buried (according to Swanson's request) in the driver's seat of his 1984 white Corvette in Hempfield County, Pennsylvania.
Swanson, a beer distributor and former U.S. Army sergeant during World War II, died the previous March 31 at the age of 71. He had reportedly been planning his automobile burial for some time, buying 12 burial plots at Brush Creek Cemetery, located 25 miles east of Pittsburgh, in order to ensure that his beloved Corvette would fit in his grave with him. After his death, however, the cemetery balked, amid concerns of vandalism and worries that other clients would be offended by the outlandish nature of the burial. They finally relented after weeks of negotiations, but insisted that the burial be private, and that the car be drained of fluids to protect the environment. "George wanted to go out in style, and, indeed, now he will," commented Swanson's lawyer in a report from The Associated Press. "We agree that this is rather elaborate, but really it's no different than being buried in a diamond-studded or gold coffin."
According to the AP, Swanson's widow, Caroline, transported her husband's ashes to the cemetery on the seat of her own white 1993 Corvette. The ashes were then placed on the driver's seat of his 10-year-old car, which had only 27,000 miles on the odometer. Inside the car, mourners also placed a lap quilt made by a group of women from Swanson's church, a love note from his wife and an Engelbert Humperdinck tape in the cassette deck, with the song "Release Me" cued up and ready to play. The license plate read "HI-PAL," which was Swanson's go-to greeting when he didn't remember a name. As 50 mourners looked on, a crane lowered the Corvette into a 7-by-7-by-16-foot hole.
"George always said he lived a fabulous life, and he went out in a fabulous style," Caroline Swanson said later. "You have a lot of people saying they want to take it with them. He took it with him."

What is auxin?
When sun-loving species are grown with full overhead light, the stems are thick, short, & upright, with leaves closely spaced. That's because the cells are growing equally on all sides of the plant.
But when light comes from 1 side only, as in the case of houseplants on a windowsill, the stems on the shady side of the plant grow longer & faster. This physiological process, called phototropism (from the Greek photo, for "light," & tropos, which means "turn"), is controlled by the plant hormone auxin, which causes the cells to lengthen. Auxin accumulates in the cells on the shaded side. Since the cells on that side then grow faster than those on the sunny side, the lants bend toward the window. If you rotate your windowsill plants a quarter turn ever other week or so, you will minimize this graphic demonstration of auxin power.

○ May 24, 2012 ○

Remember just yesterday I was saying I NEEDED some down time, some me time, some time other than work / sleep / work / sleep? Well ... I'm being punished for something, although I don't know what. Let's see ... right after I posted the blog but before I could go make breakfast, we got toned out to a fatality fire (1st photo). We were on the evening news & it seemed like the entire county was there. It's believed that an 80-year old man had a medical issue while tending to a burn pile he had going. In other words, he didn't die "because" of the fire. We no sooner got off that scene & I was STILL at the station when the Princeton gets toned out to a fully involved 2-story structure fire. Yep ... we're going to get toned for that one ... & we did. After clearing that call, we went back to the scene of the 1st call to just check & make sure everything was OK & all the hot spots were out. When it was all said & done ... when I finally came home from the station, 10 hours had passed, I was sunburned, dehydrated, overheated, physically exhausted, & I hadn't eaten anything since the day before. It was now 9:30p. I desperately needed a shower so I peeled out of the ash-caked clothing I was wearing & felt better after the shower. I mean my hair was STIFF from all the ash, dirt, & sweat caked in it. I got out of the shower & still had black soot ground into the palms of my hands. Not AS black as before, but it's still there. I look like I did back when I was 19 & working on cars all the time. Anyway ... now I needed FOOD! I had pulled out 2 Omaha Steaks burgers the night before so I grabbed those & threw them on the grill. As I was standing out there I realized, was I nuts? I spent the entire day on my feet near flames & what am I doing now? Standing on my (very sore) feet near flames. DUH! Felt better after I ate ... still exhausted though. Had a lot to catch up on around the house ... feed the pets, all that stuff. FINALLY crawl into bed at just past 2:30a feeling like a bus hit me & I swear to you my head didn't even TOUCH the pillow & the tones went off again. Med call this time. I went on that call, came home & swore I wasn't going on another call until felt better (got some SLEEP). Well ... I'll give you 3 guesses. Before my alarm goes off, we get toned out again, this time to a down power line. We're leaving that scene & come across down tree limbs blocking the road. 6 calls in just a hair over 1 day. I couldn't even get all the dirt off of me. After the calls today, I'm not going to have time for anything but work & sleep AGAIN. I mean look at the time & I'm just now getting started on my day. My most commonly used phrase & I hate it; "Maybe tomorrow." I wish I could at least see the opening of MIB3 tomorrow at the theater, but I just can't. Big surprise, right in the middle of this post we get toned out again to another EMS call.

I recently had lunch with a few good griends at an expensive restaurant. Toward the end of the meal I applied lipstick. One of my friends gave me loads of grief for pulling out my lipstick at the table. I say I was right ... or was I?
You were right - almost. It's okay to quickly apply lipstick (without fanfare & minus a mirror) at the table if you're with close friends or relatives, in a non-business situation, & at a non-deluxe restaurant. But since you were at what sounds like a deluxe restaurant, it would have been better to excuse yourself to apply your lipstick in private. Not a serious faux pas here, though! Bottom line: It's often okay, but when in doubt, don't do it.

I think that the most important thing a woman can have - next to talent, of course - is her hairdresser.

Logomachy:
1: A dispute over or about words. 2: A controversy marked by verbiage.
The increasingly partisan political atmosphere has opened the floodgates of logomachy in the media.
It doesn't take much to start people arguing about words, but there's no quarrel about the origin of "logomachy." It comes from the Greek roots logos (meaning "word" or "speech") & machesthai ("to fight"), & entered English in the mid-1500s. If you're a word enthusiast, you probably know that logos is the root of many English words ("monologue," "neologism," "logic," & most words ending in "logy," for example). Only a few very rare English words come from machesthai, though. Here are 2 of them: "heresimach" ("an active opponent of heresy & heretics") & "naumachia" ("an ancient Roman spectacle representing a naval battle").

Quick! Name 2 vines whose scientific names start with "P" that will grow well indoors!
Philodendron scandens, possibly  the world's most common houseplant, is 1, & there are literally thousands to choose from. They ask only for consistently moist soil & a fair amount of indirect light. They aren't fussy about temperature, but warmer is better; days of 80° to 85° don't faze them a bit.
Passionflower is another. There are several species from which to choose; many will flower in the winter, but this is a plant that is almost as beautiful out of flower as it is when blooming. Passion vines, as they are often called, do best indoors where they get lots of light & temperatures that stay between 70° & 80°, though they will tolerate cool nights. Don't be surprised if a particularly robust specimen sprawls around your window & infiltrates drapery rods, light fixtures, & anything else within its grasp. If you want to move yours outdoors in the summer, be sure to train it onto a free-standing frame of some sort.

Renting should be a time of wisely having patience until you reach the point where you can buy a house properly. It shouldn't be a way of life, but it's kind of like paying patience tax until you can save up for a big down payment.

"Thelma and Louise," featuring 1966 Ford Thunderbird, released (1991):
On this day in 1991, the critically acclaimed road movie "Thelma and Louise" debuts in theaters, stunning audiences with a climactic scene in which its two heroines drive off a cliff into the Grand Canyon, in a vintage 1966 green Ford Thunderbird convertible.
The road movie genre, which traces its roots as far back as Homer's "Odyssey," always involves a journey of some kind, in which the hero--almost invariably male--is confronted by challenges and learns something essential about himself along the way. Though the road movie historically didn't have to involve an actual road, the increase in the production of road movies in the mid- to late-20th century suggests the impact of the growing automobile industry and the public's fascination with the freedom inherent in a car. Two now-classic examples, "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) and "Easy Rider" (1969), helped define and popularize the road movie genre for a new generation of viewers.
"Thelma and Louise," directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by Callie Khouri, reworked the road movie genre by replacing the typically male leads with two women.
In this version, Thelma, played by Geena Davis, is a housewife repressed by her temperamental husband, while Louise (Susan Sarandon) is a steely waitress hiding a trauma in her past. Soon after the two friends set off in Louise's T-Bird convertible for a weekend vacation in a fishing cabin, events take a violent turn, and they are forced to go on the run. They drive towards Mexico, taking ever more desperate actions to elude capture along the way, culminating in their suicidal yet oddly triumphant dive into the Grand Canyon.
The iconic Thunderbird, first produced in 1955, was Ford's attempt to create a sports car that would also provide an element of luxury. From the beginning, T-Birds became highly collectible cars, and new and limited edition models were introduced each year to keep up with the growing competition. 1966 was in fact the final year in which Ford manufactured T-Bird convertibles; sales were slow, and their marketing department decided the line's luxury image was intact without the drop-top model. In addition to its co-starring role in "Thelma and Louise," the 1966 Thunderbird has made prominent appearances in several other films, including Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 teen drama "The Outsiders" and David Lynch's quirky, violent road movie "Wild at Heart" (1990).

May 23, 2012

Truly a frustrating day yesterday. I worked, worked, worked, missed training because I was working, & then finally, when I finally got to the end of all the work, I walked over to my massage chair ... & the phone rang. I was on the phone until the dryer buzzed, then everyone came walking in the door for the evening. I wanted to cry. I needed so badly to sit down & take a breath at the end of a long day, but NOPE! So close that my fingertips almost touched the chair, but NOPE! Worked my butt off Monday, too. Of course yesterday had the help of a structure fire in Princeton ... those tend to take a little bit of time. See, most people get off work & go home & sit down at the end of the day. What do you do when you work from home & you CAN'T leave work? You work until you fall asleep. I REALLY need some down time! This Friday is the opening of MIB3.

George W. Bush recovers from bicycle accident (2004):
On this day in 2004, as reported in the Washington Post, President George Bush recovers from a bicycle accident he'd had the day before. Bush had taken up mountain biking for exercise at the suggestion of physicians.
Reporter Dana Milbank recounted how Bush fell from his mountain bike while completing a 17-mile course on his ranch in Crawford, Texas. Despite scrapes and scratches on his chin, lip, nose, hand and knees, Bush--who was wearing a helmet at the time--got back on his bike and finished the course. Afterwards, a White House spokesperson warned reporters that Bush might show up for his daughter Jenna's graduation party the next Saturday sporting a bandage on his chin.
In an earlier mishap in 2003, Bush was captured on film as he fell off a motorized scooter. The physically active Bush has narrowly escaped other frightening and life-threatening incidents. In 1999, he luckily avoided major injuries when a truck carrying a load of cement and wood turned over as he was jogging by it. That same year, Bush encountered, but was not bitten by, venomous water moccasins while swimming in a watering hole on his Crawford ranch. In January 2002, Bush was alone with his two dogs watching a football game in the White House when he managed to dislodge a pretzel from his throat after choking on it.
Over the years, cartoonists and journalists have relished showing the presidents in their more uncoordinated moments, but no president has been lampooned for clumsiness like former President Gerald Ford, who was actually very athletic. After he was first photographed stumbling down the last few steps of the stairway from Air Force One, Ford's subsequent trips and falls were immortalized by actor Chevy Chase in the 1970s on the popular television show, Saturday Night Live.

Renting is an excellent idea under a few circumstances, most significantly while you're getting your financial act together. Baby steps 1, 2 & 3 should be done before you buy a home. Another reason to rent is if you're not going to be in a city for very long - like with military folks who are only in a location for a few years. Renting is also good for young couples just getting married. Be married for a while, rent something cheap, pile up cash, clean up your mess.

Spear-carrier:
1a: A member of an opera chorus b: A bit actor in a play. 2: A person whose actions are of little significance or value.
Although the former aide was only a spear-carrier in the administration, his recent memoir, which points an accusatory finger at several key players, is causing quite a stir.
"Spear-carrier" began to be used for a person having a nonspeaking or supernumerary role in opera or theater in the 1950s. The name likely came from the nondescript, often spear-carrying soldiers who appear in the background or as walk-ons in plays about ancient Rome or Greece. Off-stage, "spear-carrier" refers to a person having a minimal role in the undertaking of some major event or in the working of some major organization.

The durring edge of the knife blade faces the plate. If you're serving a seafood appetizer, the seafood fork (also known as a shellfish or an oyster fork) is placed to the right of the spoon(s) & the knife - the only fork set on the right side of the place setting.

What animal has larger eyes than any other land creature?

What, exactly, is a bonsai plant?
There's no such thing really. Instead, there are plants that are trained as bonsais. The word comes from the Japanese kanji characters bon & sai meaning "container" & "to plant." Not quite everything can be made into a bonsai, but tropical, semitropical, & temperate trees & shrubs, both evergreen & deciduous, are used.
To succeed in caring for a bonsai, you must keep it alive & healthy, & you must continue its training. You can learn more at the websites of Bonsai Clubs International & the American Bonsai Society.
Traditional bonsai plants are hardy outdoor species such as times & junipers, which cannot live indoors year-round. Here are some suggestions for indoor candidates:
Full sun: Chinese elm, dwarf pomegranate, gardenia, snow rose.
Part sun: Australian myrtle, camellia, citrus, jade plant.
Bright indirect light: Creeping fig, false heather, Norfolk Island pine, star jasmine.
